Episode 96 - TDC080522 Dr. Lisa Lichota

Join Sharon and Julie as they talk with Dr. Lisa Lichota, a pain management specialist. We discuss the best way to find relief for chronic pain and some of the things to avoid. Dr. Lisa Lichota clarifies common understandings and gives helpful suggestions to make sure you get the help you need! As women, we often put our needs behind everyone else's. Use this information to become informed and empowered! After reviewing the podcast, Dr. Lisa Lichota wanted to clarify a few points: - Pain as a symptom: While Dr. Lichota discussed pain as a symptom, many healthcare professionals in the pain management arena, including national key opinion leaders, discuss pain as a disease in itself, not a symptom. - The use of anti-depressants to treat pain: Many chronic pain patients are depressed and need and use anti-depressants to treat their depression. While some clinicians may use anti-depressants to treat the pain itself, the relationship between pain relief and anti-depressant effect remains unclear due to a lack of published research on the subject. There is not sufficient data to back up the claim that anti-depressants can effectively relieve chronic pain. - Keeping pain prescriptions to a minimum: Pain patients should have access to the various treatments and therapies they need to adequately relieve their pain. Physicians should not limit the amount of pain medication a patient receives due to fears that the medication may get into the wrong hands and be abused or misused. Patients should receive the appropriate treatment and be educated on the risks associated with these treatments. Specifically, parents and grandparents should be educated on how to manage their medications responsibly, including ensuring that the medication is only consumed by the person to whom it was prescribed.
