Episode 36 - Is There a Teacher of Love Inside of You? with Northstar

In this show, Dr. Patti talks to Northstar, an awakened, well-traveled, well read Tantra teacher who has taken it upon himself to develop his skills and talents over the years, all while holding down a nine to five job in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Starting with a profound sexual awakening experience while at college, Northstar has relentlessly pursued classes, workshops and experiences to further develop an expanded consciousness, through all sorts of workshops, including meditation, movement, dance, and sexuality. He shares with us his own unique techniques for enhancing the amount of kundalini, or vibratory chi energy that flows through one's body.  He then gives us a technique for spreading heart energy, and tells us how to use this energy to enhance orgasmic intensity and pleasure.  We can also use this technique to increase connection with a beloved. Learn how to send and receive energy through special eye gazing and energetic resonance that will have you seeing colors and even hearing music during lovemaking! Apply these techniques, with breathing techniques, in a layering fashion, along with your expanded orgasmic touches, to create a symphonic expanded orgasmic experience. Discover his opinion on whether reading books will help you learn to be a teacher, whether you can raise kundalini on your own, and how and where to meet partners. Hear Northstar and Dr. Patti discuss other issues related to becoming your own self-taught teacher of love. And inspiring show for everyone!

[musical interlude]

Dr. Patti Taylor: In this amazing show, find out what it takes to teach yourself and others Tantra. Develop your skills and circulate intense, heartfelt, and orgasmic energy through yourself, your partner, and the cosmos.

Northstar: Tantra to me is a toolbox of techniques that harness sexuality, kundalini energy is there also, but it harnesses energy and power into meditation. It's like having jet engine hooked on to your spiritual practice.

The whole universe that I was perceiving was composed of tiny points of light and some sort of a cognizant energy that I and she were a part of. After I had absorbed that lesson, I shot back into my body just as fast.

Every human being on this earth has the desire, I believe, for enlightenment and extreme pleasure.

One of the things that makes me just so amazingly fervid about Tantra is that every time, once you've learned how to go into the Tantra space, every time you do it, it is unique, it is different. I've been with my girlfriend 18 years and we make love for three or four hours and go to just incredibly loving spaces.

Tantra and expanded orgasm seem like a huge mountain to climb but they get easier and easier as you go on.

[musical interlude]

Dr. Patti Taylor: Welcome to the “Expanded Lovemaking” show. I'm your host, Dr. Patti Taylor of ExpandedLovemaking.com and I teach you how to give and receive way more pleasure than you ever dreamed possible. Today, we're asking, “Is there a teacher of love inside of you?” The question may surprise you but maybe not. Who can teach love? Is this something you've been just doing? You may have kids or a nine to five job or live in a remote area, so how could you possibly learn how, but people do all the time. So today, our guest will share with us how he has done it and how you can get started as well.

Our guest is Northstar, so welcome to the show.

Northstar: It's good to be here, Patti.

Dr. Patti Taylor: Yes, it's wonderful to have you. Since college, Northstar has felt spiritually awakened and has traveled the world pursuing all sorts of mystical experiences including Sufi dancing in Turkey, initiation in West Africa, Tantric ceremony in various [xx] house and Native American sweat lodges. He's studied male and female expanded orgasm extensively as well. Northstar has also held a regular nine to five job in the small town of Jackson Hole, Wyoming for many years as well as counsel others in Tantra or the art of love in a practice on the side.

I think the show will intrigue our listeners. Many people have had powerful awakening experiences or callings of sort and perhaps, even so, a connection to the divine. After that, they feel very loving and want to teach about love and lovemaking is, well, your past maybe unique, they may not fit into a readymade mold. In today’s linked-up world, they may have many new options for sharing their passion and knowledge about love.

So today, we'll learn what Northstar has done to develop [xx]. We'll discover some of his specialist [sp] and gain valuable wisdom for empowering our own unique teacher inside. So let's get started.

Can you tell us in your view, what is Tantra?

Northstar: Tantra to me is a tool bag of techniques that harness our sexuality, kundalini energy is there also, but it harnesses energy and power into meditation. It's like having a jet engine hooked on to your spiritual practice.

Dr. Patti Taylor: OK, and how did you get started on this path?

Northstar: When I was in college, I was lying in bed with a girlfriend. We were making love and I was taking a break lying back on the bed. Frankly, I'd never had oral sex before; she surprised me and started giving me oral sex. The sensation was so powerful, so overwhelming. My consciousness shot out of the top of my head and hovered down at the ceiling looking at us. The whole universe that I was perceiving was composed of tiny points of light and some sort of a cognizant energy that I and she were a part of. After I had absorbed that lesson, I shut back into my body just as fast but it stayed with me ever since. I am no longer able to be cynical about consciousness, about spirituality, about things that you can do to expand your experiences in this world.

Dr. Patti Taylor: Wow! Well, that’s an amazing story. So I'm guessing, what happened after that rather than me [xx], you tell us?

Northstar: I had absolutely no knowledge of Tantra at the time. By the way, I'd told this to an elderly tantric master who lived in the jungles of Hawaii, when I told him what had happened, he laughed and laughed and laughed and he said, “Tantra chose you, you didn’t choose Tantra.” After that, I had no idea what Tantra was. However, I became an aficionado of sexuality and how to expand pleasure. I had the fortune, when I was single, of dating a number of highly orgasmic women who taught me what really turned them on, what gave them pleasure, what to do. I was indeed blessed and I thank all of them, you know who you are.

Dr. Patti Taylor: Were you living out in a rural area at the time?

Northstar: No, I was in Minneapolis at the time, going to college. I did move to Jackson Hole, Wyoming immediately after college because of the sports that I'm most interested in which are kayaking, canoeing, hiking, mountaineering, rock climbing, the whole gamut of outside sports and Jackson Hole offers that in state[sp]. We're surrounded by the largest wilderness area in the lower 48 states and I've done 150-mile hikes with friends, it's just an amazing experience. We're also the least populated state in the United States and I lived in the remote area of the Northwest corner. Believe me, it's a small population and isolated.

Dr. Patti Taylor: So did you find enlighten people everywhere? Did you find geography with any limitation to finding people of practice with? I'm imagining people have this image that you have to be in the right place to find practice partners.

Northstar: Yes and no. There are always people--every human being on this earth has a desire, I believe, for enlightenment and extreme pleasure. The Buddha even said that and there are small town as well as large ones. So I would have to say people might say, “Man, if I only lived in San Francisco I could be with all of these communities.” Well, I'm here to tell you that in a huge, huge city like San Francisco, yes there is more of a tantric community or expanded orgasm community. But even in a big city, it turns out to a small town of very small population based of people that do that. Even in San Francisco, people rely on Internet to connect and meet other people from around the world of similar mind.

Dr. Patti Taylor: Right, and it also sounds like you found a lot of orgasmic people. So it sounds like you were the one, in your own orgasmic consciousness, were attracting a certain kind of person to yourself.

Northstar: I think you might be right. I think some of us can recognize that energy and spark. I will say that a pivotal point in my life was a woman that I dated left and did, indeed, move to San Francisco. I later heard that she was living on a “sex cameo[sp]” which intrigued me. I contacted her and she was staying at More University. She said, “Come on out!” and I did. I took many classes which were hands-on classes to teach people how to give and how to receive extended, expanded orgasms.

Dr. Patti Taylor: OK. I suppose I was going to ask what did you do to really further your training to educate yourself since you did live in a remote area?

Northstar: That is one of the things that I did was I did travel to other places. Another thing is, in the last 10 years or so, an amazing number of books have come out that teach Tantra from different schools, from different aspects and indeed, you can have a wonderful time. I oftentimes think my favorite Tantra book is the last one I just read. Another experience I've had, I'd received formal training at the Network for New Cultures, it's NFNC.org. They sponsor very affordable summer camp retreats every year and have great speakers, great people stopping by, all of it is geared towards heart opening and community.

I've also studied and pursued Tantra at the School of Tantra on Maui operated by the Lessins. I highly recommend it, it’s SchoolofTantra.com. Yes, when we travel, we try to find other people in the area we're going to that we can study with, teach, meet if only for a cup of coffee. There is a lot out there, I recommend that you continue your education, not only locally, but hey, you take vacations. You are not isolated.

Dr. Patti Taylor: So do you continue to have mind-blowing sex that continues to surprise you?

Northstar: Oh, Patti. First of all, I would like to say that there are schools of Tantra, schools of thought that say orgasm is debilitating and even dangerous. Patti, I'm here to say that as aficionados like the two of us, if that was true, we'd be crawling down the street. But, the orgasmic energy can be channeled, it can be stored, it can be shared, it can be saved. Yes, one of the things that makes me just so amazingly fervid about Tantra is that every time, once you learned how to go into the Tantra space, every time you do it, it is unique, it is different. I've been with my girlfriend 18 years and we make love for three or four hours and go to just incredibly loving spaces. It leads out into our relationship as a whole, the communication skills you need are essentially the same ones you need for dynamite relationship.

Dr. Patti Taylor: Wow! So this is Reality 101, that you're just hearing this live. How often would you have these experiences like per month?

Northstar: Per month? I would guess a handful per month.

Dr. Patti Taylor: A handful like three or four?

Northstar: Yes.

Dr. Patti Taylor: Wow! That’s amazing, after 18 years, yes, I have to say!

Northstar: It's an important part of my life and I'm not lying. This is a well worn path that many people have taken for thousands of years. Another fantastic thing about Tantra is you don’t have to fantasize, you become the fantasy, you become the reality.

Dr. Patti Taylor: That is so beautiful, would you want to tell us more?

Northstar: When Tantra talks about being a god or a goddess, they are talking about actually becoming a god or a goddess. They talk about as if you were a god or a goddess. You give your partner the same kind of respect and diligence you would as if you had a god or a goddess there. You are worshipping the divine spark that is in all of us. So once you start learning how to get into the Tantra state, you can actually be with a god or a goddess. It would just way beyond fantasy.

Dr. Patti Taylor: Well, it's really true and I think it's because there's a lot going on, you're connecting up your nervous system, it's not a fantasy. You're actually are connecting up your nervous system, your connecting up your pineal gland, the higher centers of consciousness in your mind, body, heart, and spirit. You're connecting to the design and you're really entering into another dimension, so it's way beyond fantasy.

Northstar: I agree entirely. Another thing is when you're setting up the Tantra scenarios, there are parts of the mind--and this is in Tantra--just Tantra in saying that it's modern psychology has proven it also. There are parts of the mind that absolutely believe what is told. So the visualizations we do, the affirmations we do completely dovetail with modern cognitive behavioral psychology which is, nowadays, the most popular potent form of psychotherapy.

Dr. Patti Taylor: I think [xx] they're coming around to a much more positive viewpoint. I just want to say we I, myself, in my life in having that kind of meltdown blow-up unbelievable [xx] me-off-the-world rocket ship expanded lovemaking. I'm really glad to hear other people coming on the show and having it in their own life, too. You know, if this is real, it's happening to me.

We're going to stop and take a break so we can come back and get more details from you – details, details, details. We do want to support our sponsors for a moment. This is Dr. Patti Taylor and I am with Northstar. We will be right back, I promise.

[radio break]

Dr. Patti Taylor: We're back and I'm Dr. Patti Taylor. We are asking, “Is there a teacher of love inside of you?” So before the break, we were talking about how Northstar got started and a little bit about what he did to teach himself and stay on the path.

Now Northstar, I'd like talk about a little bit of your specialties. I know you've developed, with all these amazing training and practice that you've done, some specialties. A couple of things you've told me about that was really turned me on, one of them is vibration. Can you tell me a little bit about how you put in to the tips of your fingers and why you think it's important and just what you do with it?

Northstar: Sure. First of all, I'm going to be talking about steps and how to guide people into it. Our listeners might have to--I'll be going over it briefly, they can listen to the interview again, take notes and take 10 or 15 minutes doing the meditative steps I'm talking about.

Dr. Patti Taylor: Yes, good. So what is it what is the vibration and then go on?

Northstar: OK. First of all, the vibration, I believe, that we're dealing with is a basic light energy. In Tantra, it's referred to as kundalini. The raki people refer to it as raki energy. People into Tai Chi, Qi gong refer to it as chi. Wilhelm Reich, the heretical psychiatrist referred to it as a streaming or the ‘orgone’. I think we're all dealing with the same thing using different paradigms to recognize it, channel it, and nurture it.

Dr. Patti Taylor: Beautiful. So how do we do it?

Northstar: OK. Here is what I use with people. First of all, here's a simple one and here are the steps. I read it recently from Barbara Carrellas, “Focus your attention on your little finger. Feel it grow warmer. Feel the hearbeat. Feel the space around it. Feel a tingle in your finger. Feel light. Feel explosions. Feel the universe in your fingertip, your little finger. Feel orgasmic energy. Now, now that you've gotten to that point--and again, this takes a lot longer--but now that you've gotten to that point of increased awareness, remember what you've learned and transfer it to your ‘Yoni’ or your ‘Lingam’, your sexual organs.

Dr. Patti Taylor: Wow!

Northstar: Another practice that I really like, I call it ‘heartbeat meditation’. It’s entirely Tantric because it focuses on the body, it doesn’t deny the body. It's something you can do anywhere anytime. Here are the steps: lie down comfortably in bed with your head on a pillow, relax all you can. Are you relaxed? No, you're not, you aren’t focused on your heartbeat. Feel your heart beating.

Isn’t that amazing how strong it is once you focus your attention on your heart beating? Are you relaxed all the way? No, you're not because if you were, you would be able to feel your heart beating in your fingertips. Once you can feel your heart beating in your fingertips, with just going a little bit further, you can feel waves of your heartbeat going up and down your body, up and own your limbs. It feels really good.

Now, let's stop the exercise there. I'm here to tell you that at this point, once you've learned how to go in there to drop into that relaxed state, you can do it anywhere anytime. If you were in a long line at the bank and you're feeling empty, you can drop into it and do your heartbeat meditation. This is also a really good place to go to with orgasm. I give you my word, if you drop into this place just at or before the point of orgasm, you will have a full body orgasm. Yes, even the man will have a full body orgasm. It won't be a high voltage burst of energy, a lightning bolt, it’ll be sweeter, you'll have waves coming up and down your body. Those waves, Patti, you brilliantly described as tiny darts of electrical pleasure and I agree entirely.

Now doing penetrative sex, it may be difficult; it's easy to get lost. So doing your homework, self-loving yourself or having partner doing you manually with a lot of lubrication, you can learn to go into that space. I will also say--continuing the exercise--that once you get to the point where you can feel your heartbeat in your fingertips and your toes without orgasm, just in a meditative state, you are just literally a heartbeat away from feeling those tiny electrical darts of pleasure.

Imagine a space around your body that goes out three or four inches, and you can feel the waves of those darts going up and down your body. This is a great place to study esoteric things like shakra, work energy centers in your body, opening up your heart, sharing energy with your partner, feeling your partner’s energy around their body. It's a great place to stroke your partner at because you can get to a point where you can cultivate and feel the energy transfer.

Dr. Patti Taylor: Wow! That was so beautifully described. What kind of breathing would you be doing at this point?

Northstar: There are a lot of breathing techniques that are out there. I'm not going to say anyone is right, anyone is wrong.

Dr. Patti Taylor: I'm just guessing maybe this really deep breathing or relax.

Northstar: Everybody says deep breathing; I'm going to give you a breathing technique. You can do it by yourself, you can adopt it to yourself. I am going to tell you how to do it with a partner. This will really, really expand your consciousness, guaranteed.

Dr. Patti Taylor: Oh, good.

Northstar: I call it the ’Bill Clinton breathing technique’.

Dr. Patti Taylor: OK. Whatever party affiliation you are, I'm sure you're going to like it. So let's have it.

Northstar: I call it the ‘Bill Clinton technique’ because you inhale and you inhale deeply. I want you to inhale with every molecule of air, looking at your partner, lying in bed comfortably with your heads about eight or 12 inches away, gazing into each other’s left eye. This helps prevent eye jitter. Alternate breathing, when one partner exhales, they blow it to the other one and the other one is inhaling it.

I don’t want you to just breathe deeply, I want you to go super deep to where you inhale until you've got only a molecule or more of fresh clean air you can bring in and then inhale more and bring that in then exhale it to your partner. While you’re exhaling, don’t push it, keep it comfortable, but then push it out so that you're giving the last two or three molecules of oxygen to your partner and then you reciprocate back and forth.

This is very powerful stuff. You may see colors, your partner’s face may distort. You may hear music. If it gets too intense, all you have to do is close your eyes and return to normal breathing. Assuming you're getting into it, you can get so zoned out in this place that you have to remind each other to keep breathing. Remember, I called Tantra a toolbox of techniques, I call it layering where you're eye gazing, doing the ‘Bill Clinton tantric breath’ and you can start adding other things also.

You can slightly rock your pelvises towards each other. You can visualize sexual energy passing between each other. This breathing technique will make a lot of that easier. Another fun thing to do is to open up your heart and just have your heart melt and meshed together. It's a great point to study the shakras. It's a great place to lightly stroke each other, perhaps sexually if you want. You don’t have to do any of that but it will point you along the path.

Dr. Patti Taylor: Right. Shakras are the energy centers in the tantric yoga system.

Northstar: I agree, yes, and they are the energy centers in the tantric system.

Dr. Patti Taylor: There are seven of them, right?

Northstar: It's seven main ones and I don’t really have time to talk about it I will tell everybody listening that some people believe in them implicitly, some people don’t. Even if you don’t believe in them implicitly, they are a wonderful allegory that will teach you and help guide you along the way. Once kundalini energy starts blowing out of the top of your head, if you use the allegory of shakras, you'll know what's going on.

Dr. Patti Taylor: So you've worked with a lot of people and have you seen that this kundalini energy which is like you said the chi or it's in different paradigms that this energy, have you seen everyday people coming in and just having a blow out at the top of their head when they practice this techniques?

Northstar: It's no guarantee and you may not want it. One woman that I'd worked with recently, once I told her about a full blown kundalini experience, she said, “Oh, that happened to me six or eight months ago.” She was not having sex, she was on a mountain road, and of course, and it just happened spontaneously without her studying Tantra at the time, anything like that. Her boyfriend got angry at her because it was her turn to drive and she said, “I can't do it.”

Dr. Patti Taylor: I think that’s a good point. There's no guarantee but it's like what happens to people that are prepared and it certainly helps.

Northstar: Indeed. I will say that the full blown experience of kundalini which I have been there a number of times is what you normally feel sexually when you're having a good time. It's what you normally feel in ordinary Tantra. It's like the icing on the cake of love, but it can turn into a fire hose of energy coming up. When that happens, you can't turn it off like a TV set, you have to go with the flow like we do at a lot of life experiences.

Dr. Patti Taylor: Right. So a lot of this stuff is just learning how to open up the hoses and, hey, you're going to have a great time with just great expanded orgasm. It's going to be such a beautiful bonding connective gorgeous experience. It's complete and perfect in itself, and a lot of amazing energy will run through you.

Northstar: Yes, it is. Again, expanded orgasm is another tool in the toolbox of Tantra. I will say for people that travel and study that you are a wonderful person to go to workshops with. Patti, you do traveling and so people can get on your newsletter and they can find out where to go to learn.

Dr. Patti Taylor: Thank you, you're very kind.

Northstar: I will also say briefly that there are a number of people out there now--not a huge number--that teach expanded orgasm or things like that and some of them, I won't mention their names, I don’t recommend. I won't mention their names off the radio but if somebody claims to have invented these all by themselves and doesn’t honor the people that actually preceded them, you don’t want to study with them.

Dr. Patti Taylor: That’s true. Sure, I was going to say we've never met but we've been in contact since 1998 when, I believe, you got my video, my DVD or even before that so I've been aware of you as a person on the path for quite a long time. We've actually had just an ongoing dialog for I don’t know how many years. So I just want it rolled out there.

Northstar: Yes. I'll tell to all the listeners, another reason I recommend you highly, you've got a book out, “Expanded Orgasm”, you've got the DVD and you're accessible. You're not one of these authors that write a book and are unapproachable, unassailable. If somebody has a question, all they have to do is email you and bingo, you're right there!

Dr. Patti Taylor: Well, thank you, you're very kind. I guess, there's a teacher that lives inside of me, too.

Anyway, we're going to take another break, just a short one--I'm having so much fun talking to Northstar--to support our sponsors. I am talking to Northstar and we will be right back.

You can find out more about Northstar at JacksonHoleTantra.com.

[radio break]

Dr. Patti Taylor: We're back and I'm Dr. Patti Taylor and we are asking, “Is there a teacher of love inside of you?” Well, from one teacher of love to another, obviously, you're talking to some good people today.

OK, so before that break, we were talking about some of your specialist and I'm inspired because you've read these books, you've learned, you've self-studied so much. You've gone to experts in the field and then you've also developed your own stuff. You've practice; you're a real inspiration to me. You live in a remote area and you have a nine-to-five job. You have a great relationship. So I have a couple of questions for you. What can you recommend to people, listeners out there for how they can get started? What do you have to say to them? What steps can they take?

Northstar: Again, I had said earlier, a lot of times my favorite Tantra book is the last one I've just read. For somebody that is just starting on the path, I would say the grand daddy of all books, the Tantra 101 is Margot Anand’s “The Art of Sexual Ecstasy”. Go through the book, chapter by chapter, don’t skip over anything because it's seems silly. You'll find that some of the stuff that you recoil from because it seems a little bit silly is actually turning out to be the most effective, most powerful things that are out there. I also recommend, again, your book “Expanded Orgasm” and your DVD. Especially when you're starting out, nothing can replace individual instruction or going to workshops.

I do individual instruction, you do that and workshops and that can help get you going along the way. I don’t really believe in or follow gurus for a number of reasons. I think also for a lot of people interested in Tantra, it's sex, sex, sex. Well, it is but it's a path of beauty and the sexuality just turns out to be a small part of it. Learn how to bring it into all of your life. When you listen to music, have an eargasm. When you taste great food, have a tonguegasm, a tastegasm. When you laugh, laugh from your soul, have a gaygasm. Another thing, the worst place to go to learn this kind of expanded orgasm and sexuality is to study porn films. There's a very real danger you might actually think that’s how making love is done.

Dr. Patti Taylor: Good point there. How about making friends on the Internet? I've heard so many people say, “Where do I find a practice partner?” I guess, I've got two questions there.

Northstar: Yes. I live in a remote enough area that I haven’t really tried it. I think because websites change, because they ebb and they flow in popularity, there are Tantra websites, there are Tantra dating services. I wouldn’t hang out with a swing sites very much, you're very unlikely to find somebody in the Tantra there. I would recommend to people looking for practice partners, you're more likely to find people in the poly or polyamory community, they're more often to this. If you Google poly, polyamory dating, I'm sure you'll find some good websites for getting involved with other people with open mind.

Dr. Patti Taylor: That’s really beautiful. I think one thing I really heard you say almost right at the beginning is you, yourself really were very clear on your own enlightenment. I think that more than anything, drove you to do. You had the confidence that you were awake and that actually--just you never lost that faith in yourself and that was at the core of everything you did.

Northstar: Yes, indeed. This isn’t Tantra, I'll throw it out because I advise all of my students to do it. There is an offshoot of ‘Sufi dancing’ called ‘dances of universal peace’. If you Google it, you'll find their website, DancesofUniversalPeace.org and their dances held around the United States and the world. What it does is it cultivate heart opening and once your heart is open, it's like a sun, it shines above and below.

Dr. Patti Taylor: That’s a great suggestion. So we're almost out of time and we'd like to ask you one final question. What is the one thing you'd like to say just as a final parting thought of inspiration to people who’ve been listening to this show today?

Northstar: Tantra and expanded orgasm seem like a huge mountain to climb but they get easier and easier as you go on. Many people have done it, you can do it, too. Layering the steps together like I've told you, it's like when you were a kid. Remember, you'd pat your stomach and rub your head and that was kind of difficult. Then, you jump off up and down on one foot which is even more difficult but it got easier with time. It's the same thing with expanded orgasm and Tantra, it only gets easier.

Dr. Patti Taylor: Wow! Absolutely. I'm inspired, it's a great, great idea to leave people with! Thank you.
