In addition to his writing work, Derek has worked in the natural foods industry for 10 years, and is currently employed as the General Manager of a Food Co-operative in Fort Collins, CO. He and his wife are advocates for attachment parenting and homebirth, and together they homeschool their two children. They recently completed a 5 and a half year alternative lifestyle experiment, living with their children in an 8 by 15 foot trailer, hauling all their water by hand, and using a "humanure" (humanewer) toilet, in an attempt to lower their planetary footprint.
